Azucarera wayfinding by Sitio Estudio
This award-winning project by Sitio Estudio addresses a complex challenge: bringing legibility and visual coherence to a six-story historic building, while preserving the heritage identity of the former sugar refinery (Azucarera). The solution goes beyond simple wayfinding; it adds a “layer of vitality” to the existing structure, transforming the identity of Zaragoza Joven (Zaragoza’s city council youth area) into a vibrant, functional navigation system that is fully integrated into the building.
The system is structured around three key elements. First, the use of materials that resonate with the site’s history—such as galvanised steel and perforated panels—pays homage to the building’s industrial, metal-working past. Second, the application of ‘Zaragoza Joven’s’ corporate colours serves as a tool for identification and orientation. Finally, an intuitive navigation system presents the former sugar refinery as a contemporary, dynamic, and—above all—youthful space.
The Zaragoza Joven brand is broken down into dot-based textures and geometric patterns, which are applied both as vinyl graphics on glass facades and as die-cut metal elements throughout the building.
The project’s innovative approach to wayfinding has earned major recognition, including the Anuaria Oro at the Premios Anuaria and a bronze medal at the European Design Awards 2026.
